Yoga Styles Explained

As you approach yoga, the most common question asked is "What do the different styles mean?" and "Where should I start?" Two very good questions. Yoga used to simply mean yoga. It was designed to cater to the individual and to meet them where they were at - normally in a private setting. Since yoga found its way into a group environment (to meet the growing demand) the styles of yoga were born. This way you have the power to choose what you feel like practicing and you get to pick how your yoga can support you. The best advice I can offer is to mix it up. Don't get stuck in one way of practicing. Yoga is a massive system that holds so much medicine. The classes we offer are in a small group environment so you will be looked after. All teachers at BILBY know how to adapt a practice to meet you where you are. So let's learn about what's on offer!

Dynamic Yoga

Dynamic Yoga is a moving meditation that cultivates both physical strength and mental focus. This class is a fusion of Hatha and Vinyasa Flow, combining breath-synchronized movement with moments of stillness and alignment. Through intentional sequencing, you will move through asanas (postures) in harmony with your breath, developing endurance, flexibility, and a deep connection to your body. Each session is designed to challenge and energize. Whether you are looking to build strength, refine your technique, or experience the meditative quality of a flowing practice, Dynamic Yoga provides the space to grow both physically and mentally.

Hatha

Hatha Yoga is a branch of yoga that emphasizes physical postures, breath control, and meditation. It serves as a foundation for many other styles of yoga and is often considered a preparatory practice for more advanced techniques. The term "Hatha" itself is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Ha," meaning sun, and "Tha," meaning moon, symbolizing the balance of opposing.

Flow for Everyone

Flow for Everyone is a balanced and accessible yoga class that blends dynamic movement with gentle postures, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. This class is designed to help you gently build strength, improve flexibility, and move mindfully, all while staying connected to your breath. Whether you’re new to yoga or have an established practice, Flow for Everyone adapts to your needs, offering modifications and variations to support your journey. In this class, you will experience a combination of gentle yet energizing sequences that strengthen and restore the body. The breath is an essential part of the practice, guiding each movement to create a flowing and meditative experience.

Gentle Hatha + Yoga Nidra

Gentle Hatha + Yoga Nidra is a balanced and accessible yoga class that offers gentle postures to rinse the body, followed by a yoga nidra (deep guided relaxation). This class is designed to help rinse the body, improve flexibility, and move mindfully, all while staying connected to your breath. Whether you’re new to yoga or have an established practice, this class is a beautiful massage for your nervous system.

Restorative/Yin

Restorative & Yin Yoga is a deeply relaxing practice that combines the stillness of Yin Yoga with the gentle support of Restorative Yoga. Designed to release tension, promote flexibility, and encourage deep rest, this class is perfect for anyone looking to slow down and restore balance in body and mind. In this session, you’ll hold gentle, supported postures for extended periods, allowing muscles and connective tissues to relax and lengthen. Props such as bolsters and blankets provide additional support, helping you settle into each pose comfortably. The practice is paired with conscious breathing and mindfulness techniques, creating a meditative and soothing experience. No experience is required—this class is accessible to all levels and is particularly beneficial for those recovering from stress, injury, or simply seeking a calming escape from daily life. With small class sizes, you’ll receive individualized attention in a peaceful, nurturing environment.

Pilates

While pilates is a new system (100 years old) compared to yoga (7,000 years old), it compliments it beautifully. Pilates is a physical fitness system that focuses on strengthening muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. It emphasizes core strength, stability and controlled movements. It is a great way to develop the strength to do a stronger asana practice.

Power Flow

Power Flow is a strong, dynamic class designed to build strength, endurance, and flexibility while challenging both body and mind. This energizing practice is rooted in Vinyasa Flow, incorporating powerful asanas, creative sequencing, and breath-driven movement to help you elevate your practice. Expect a fast-paced, heat-building sequence that strengthens muscles, enhances mobility, and improves focus. You’ll flow through challenging postures, arm balances, and core-stabilizing movements, all while staying connected to the rhythm of your breath. This class encourages exploration, allowing you to push your limits, build confidence, and refine your technique in a supportive environment. Power Flow is ideal for seasoned practitioners or those looking to take their asana practice to the next level. Modifications will be offered, but a foundational understanding of yoga is recommended.

Sound Bath

A sound bath is an immersive experience that uses sound waves to promote relaxation and healing. It offers deep relaxation, stress reduction, enhanced meditation, improved sleep, and can help release emotional blockages. Using 7 pure crystal bowls, you can simply lay back and receive the medicine. A divine nervous system reset.

Whether you’re a beginner looking for guidance or an experienced practitioner wanting to advance your skills, this one-on-one experience ensures a practice that suits your goals.
